Josh's Story

Josh Ungar born and raised in the DC metro area, and now residing in Washington DC.  Josh plays mandolin, bass as well as a lead and backup vocalist performing in multiple bluegrass, americana and rock bands. Current groups include: Split String Soup based in NOVA, Brandy Station Company based in Remington VA, and the newly formed Carriage House Pickers in DC.  Josh also was a founding member of the Porch Pickers Brigade.  Josh has performed with and opened for well know groups including Larry Keel, David Via & the Corn Tornados, and local bands like the Woodshedders.

Josh got his passion for music from his father who introduced him to classical, rock, and folk.  He quickly found a passion for the guitar and started to listen to bands like Pink Floyd, and the Grateful Dead where he was introduced to David Grisman.  In his 20's Josh heard a mandolin in person and realized it was the instrument for him, and has been focusing on honing his mandolin picking skills since.  Josh attended the 2nd Delfest Academy and was hooked ever since, learning from great mandolin players such as Ronnie McCoury of the Del McCoury Band and Travilin McCoury's, Jesse Cobb formerly of the Infamous Stringdusters and Jesse Brock of the Gibson Brothers.  Josh current works for the McCoury's as and assistant for the Delfest Academy for the last 3 years.  In 2010 Josh placed 3rd in the Watermelon Park Festival mandolin picking competition.  Josh's driving chop style, strong tenor vocals make him stand out among most mandolin players.

Josh generally performs between 2 to 6 times a month all over the DC Metro area, as well as the suburbs in VA and MD, from Rockville MD to Culpepper VA.  Please check out the music from some of the bands including "Turn" written by Josh Ungar.  Also check out the events page to see upcoming shows and contact Josh if you have any questions or are interested in hiring him or one of his musical acts for your parties, weddings, conferences, restaurants, backyard BBQ's and festivals.
